From personal experience I know only too well the challenges involved in accident and injury recovery. Six years ago I was nearly killed in a car accident that put me in Harborview Hospital for more than two weeks. At the time I owned and operated my business, Balanced Bodyworks. In the past I had been a firefighter, competitive bodybuilder, and was an avid cyclist, hiker and yoga enthusiast. All of those passions were taken from my life that summer morning as my car was struck head on in Kirkland.
In the ensuing months I became reliant on others for the most basic of care while my injuries healed. Over time I progressed from a wheelchair to the walker; the crutches to a walking boot. To regain mobility I began to implement the Functional Training and Core strengthening tools I use today with all my clients: exercises using tubing, medicine balls, Swiss Ball, and light dumbbells. My doctors were constantly amazed with my progress and recovery. Today I have regained almost full range of motion throughout my body, which has enabled me to once again embrace my passions ~ cycling, hiking and yoga.
This devastating event became a life-learning experience, making me stronger and more understanding of my clients' needs. More than a year elapsed before I resumed my business and former avocations. The fortunate thing about the accident was it allowed me to gain better empathy toward my clients' fitness and recovery needs. Whether it be accident therapy, or simply feeling better about their body image, I can now truly walk in my client's shoes.
